Four I's of oppression

While I was doing the reading and videos on the four I’s of oppression it brought some ideas I didn't know much about to my attention. I've done a lot of learning about oppression and how it works before but these I’s help break it down into easier categories. Starting with Ideological oppression, as the video starts Ideological oppression is rooted in the idea of how someone should be based on their identity, along with the privileged identity being better than them. Currently, I think we’ve been hearing this kind of oppression of immigrants in the media. Lately, I’ve been hearing about immigrants being violent, lazy, and job-stealers as if that’s an inherent quality that comes with being an immigrant especially if they’re from a Spanish-speaking/non-white country. Which I believe also ties in with intersectionality since they wouldn’t be facing this specific kind of oppression if not for both race and immigration status. Internalized oppression is when someone feels less than or better than someone else due to their identity. Growing up I always felt less than other kids. I couldn’t speak as well, I couldn’t make friends, or make eye contact, even had bad motor skills with my hands. I couldn’t verbalize it yet but what I was feeling was internalized feelings about being autistic. Even though I didn’t know I had it until 2020, the feelings still happened. I internalized that being autistic is bad even though I didn’t use the word autistic. Interpersonal oppression is the off-handed comments someone makes. In my life, this kind of oppression has been used towards women the most. I’ve been told women are more emotional and that’s bad. Women weren’t as smart, and men were needed to be leaders. This kind of thing made me feel worse about my gender assigned at birth. The last one is institutional oppression. Again in media, we’re seeing this a lot with transgender people. One example that comes to mind is the laws being talked about where trans kids could be taken from parents who support them. As well as laws where teachers have to disclose a student going by a different name or pronoun to possibly unsupportive parents. This puts trans kids in a lot of danger, forcing them back into the closet or worse.

  1. I totally agree that there are many stereotypes being pushed upon us because others around us made us feel a certain way or society has made us view certain aspects of a human to be wrong or believed to act a certain way depending where we come from. It's up to society to view people as just a person instead of placing certain genders and nationalities in a stereotypical group.

  2. I really liked the way you added the real world example of immigrant oppression in the media. I also talked about experiences with female oppression and how often women are seen as emotional or weak.

  3. I like how you connected these concepts to current issues especially with immigration and how intersectionality affects them in addition to the I's of oppression.
